Remove Hardware

Ready to start painting your kitchen cabinets? First, you’ll want to remove all of the hardware from your doors and drawers to prevent any paint from getting on them. And, since you’re taking all of the hardware off the paint, this is the perfect time to find some new hardware and just swap out your new hardware when you put your cabinets back together!

Remove Cabinet Doors & Label

While you could try to paint your kitchen cabinets and drawers while they’re still attached, we recommend removing them. This allows you to lay them flat, making it easier to paint them with a smooth, even coat and give them the space they need to dry. Additionally, if you have cabinets and drawers of different sizes, make sure you label them using some masking tape so you can easily put all of the cabinets and drawers back in the right place!

Sand

Then it’s time to prepare your surface for paint. If your cabinets are smooth or have a glossy coat on them, the paint won’t have anything to adhere to. Lightly sanding the surface creates an area for the paint to stick to, allowing your paint to spread smoothly and evenly. Just make sure you dust off any extra sawdust or dirt using a damp cloth before applying your paint!

Paint

Once you’ve prepped your cabinets for paint, it’s time to get started! Tools like an angled brush or a roller make it easier to create smooth brush lines or get into the edges and grooves of your cabinets. After the first coat, you can sand down any rough spots before adding a second coat.
