When getting ready for the winter holiday season, decorating your home is generally the first thing people do to add that festive feel! This holiday season, don’t worry about breaking the bank with expensive holiday decorations, and instead, create fun memories with your kiddos and beautiful decorations that you can be proud to display! Exterior Ice Lanterns
Perhaps one of the most simple, yet enchanting DIYs is creating beautiful outdoor ice lanterns! Find large circular or square food containers in our kitchen section to start off. Then, take a drink cup or glass and weigh it down inside the container — the weight will keep the cup from floating inside the water. Then, fill the container with water and freeze! Once the block is frozen, run warm water over it to pop the cup out of the middle and slide the ice out of the container and place outside with a wax or battery-operated outdoor candle from our Home Decor section, and you’ve got an ethereal winter lantern!
Kid-Sized “Gingerbread House”
Include the kiddos in the decorating fun this year with a DIY “life-sized” gingerbread house made from packing boxes! Stop by Ace to pick up two jumbo boxes, and while you’re here, grab some packing or masking tape. Unfold one of the boxes, tape the flaps together to make sure it stays open (on both sides), and then stand it up. From here, make sure you cut out a door and windows (adults, please do this for the kids!) and then use the second box, still flat, as the roof! You can either tape it down flat, or make some more cuts to make it sit like a classic A-shaped roof. Once your ‘house’ foundation is ready, let the kiddos go crazy decorating it! Use fun things like construction paper, glitter glue, wrapping paper, and more to really customize the house to their liking!
DIY Shelf Mantle
If you don’t have a classic mantle to hang stockings from or decor to place, make your own with supplies from your local La Pine Ace Hardware store! This DIY takes a little more work, but it’s so worth it for a beautiful, customized holiday piece! Purchase the wood pieces from our fully-stocked lumber yard, as well as drawer pulls from our hardware section to start. Make sure you have other supplies, like wood glue and a drill, by asking one of our friendly staff for recommendations on what you might need. Piece together your wood back and top, paint, and then screw in the pulls for handy stocking holders, and you have your customized temporary mantle for the holiday season! Create a uniquely interesting centerpiece or accent using piping and candles! Depending on your level of skill, you can follow a tutorial like this one to create a candle holder out of copper piping, or you can achieve the same effect with pvc pipes that have been glued and painted with your choice of metallic colors!
